I was asked to partner with Fly Buys and share my top tips for throwing an ultimate summer party for the family obviously I jumped at the opportunity because A - We love to party and B - We love Fly Buys. We do a lot of shopping at Fly Buys partner store and in the past have been able to get some great freebies though Fly Buys so it wasn’t hard to showcase their products in this summer blog.

I’m all about Summer and I’m not letting the small technicality that it’s not actually summer any more get me down, I heard a rumour that Autumn is the new Summer so we are embracing it! Our kids are outside kids they are out there first thing in the morning and till the sun sets at night ok well until they are forced into bed probably sill grubby with wet hair from being in the pool for a good few hours, Rocky loves his pool so when we were cashing in our last lot of fly buys points I thought I would let him pick something out, it was great until his giant pizza arrived and I was like bro it doesn’t even fit in your pool?! And he’s like Mum it’s fine and it’s a pizza boat so it’s meant to be MASSIVE which is also his fave word at the moment like literally everything is massive which is fine and cute and what not but it’s only a matter of time before his new describing word gets him into a pickle! HA. Any way he picked the inflatable pizza boat thing and he loves it he actually loves it so much he took it to his room and was pretty set on sleeping with it until I told him pizza’s don’t sleep in bed’s and they much prefer to sleep in the garage, I mean who needs a teddy when you can have a giant pizza in your bed at night.

We are great BBQ eaters and even when we aren’t cooking on the Weber Q we eat our dinner outside most nights of the week, ok when the crazy Christchurch weather allows us too! But we will try to eat outside as often as possible both kids love it and it allows them to continue their outdoor play in between bits of pizza which is probably our go to outdoor eating food, I am quite confident I make the best home-made pizza’s in the world seriously ask anyone I’m so good at it and Rocky will even sometimes eat the capsicum on it! Pizza is such a go to in our house because it’s easy enough to pack up and take on a picnic or just share at the table there’s minimal mess which let’s be honest is what I’m all about so it’s a no brainer here plus it’s pizza your kids are going to eat it and they’re probably not going to complain! After claiming such a prestige title in the pizza world I figured I better put my money where my mouth is and write up my ultimate pizza recipe for all the baby mama’s to try remember you will NOT have to force feed this to your kids.

  • Dough
  • 1 3/4 cups plain flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  •  teaspoon salt
  • 2/3 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup oil
  • Toppings
  • Chicken breast
  • Bacon
  • Capsicum
  • Red onion
  • Spinach
  • Mushroom
  • Cream cheese
  • BBQ sauce
  • Mozzarella

  • Mix the flour, baking powder and salt in a bowl.
  • Pour in the milk and oil, mix with a knife and then knead for 5 minutes.
  • Roll out and place on a pizza stone.

Cut the chicken and bacon into small sized pieces and cook separately, spread a thin layer of cream cheese on the pizza bases and then swirl on the BBQ sauce. Add the chopped capsicum, mushroom, red onion and spinach then top with dollops of cream cheese. Finish with another swirl on BBQ and then generous sprinkling of cheese!

We cook ours in the Weber until base is golden and crisp.

TOP TIP using a pizza stone will give you the most amazing crispy pizza base!

Now you have the food sorted let’s get down to business how to entertain without your kids being super annoying and “mumming” you every five minutes like seriously let’s talk about how to enjoy entertaining when your kids are around! I’m not talking about throwing a huge party and the whole children should be seen but not heard situation I’m talking about just getting them to enjoy summer nights without hanging on your bloody coat tail, this could be a date night where you have no baby sitter so you can’t leave them but you can include them and almost pretend they aren’t there or if you have the Whanau over and you just want to have an adult conversation without them being all up in your grill. I have all the secrets don’t you worry!

Set up a family outside movie night – you don’t have to be all fancy and what not, I’m not talking about a whole bloody projector or a hiring an outdoor cinema! I’m talking about you and the kids set up in the back yard with some blankets and cushions with a laptop on Netflix and the sounds pumping from the UE boom. It’s so easy and not only is it super romantic for mum and dad but the kids will love it and hopefully let you pick something actually good and semi adultish.

Have backyard games going – Rocky will happily play with Ruby for hours however Ruby she doesn’t really want a bar of him or anyone ha and we normally have to break up some kind of scrap between them but she’s pretty happy just plodding alongside her if there is some sort of activity involved. Growing up it wasn’t a summer party without back yard cricket right? We have tried and I’m not going to lie it’s a nightmare with kids our age imagine Rocky chasing the dog with the bat and Ruby throwing the ball in a bush every two seconds, us adults had a great time though!

Water play – We have our paddling pool close enough to the outdoor living area that we can sit at the table and supervise the kids or let them splash around the pool without actually getting in! Grab some cool pool toys and make it a party remember Rocky’s pizza boat it is actually the best and you can’t go past a slip and slide we had a single but couldn’t pass up the double slip and slide so that I could show Rocky how it’s done.

Give the kids their own party – Make the kids their very own party away from your party this is a genius idea if I must say so myself! Basically you set the kids up as far away as possible but still close enough to supervise and you get them some platters with all sorts of kiddy goodness think cheese, crackers, chips, dips, frozen berries, choc, marshmallows, fruit, cheerio’s like if your kid likes it then chuck it on there. Then depending on your children’s taste pick their poison we go for watered down fruit juice or a low sugar lemonade but water with berries in it will do the trick too! Finish the party with a bang by whipping out some healthy ice blocks you’ve made in the munch ice block moulds, this right here is a recipe for success not only for the kids but for the parents socializing in peace! Now that you have picked their beverages don’t forget you can get your drink of choice through fly buys too! Yep you don’t even have to leave your house, it’s a win win yo.

I’ve popped together a list of places we get the most bang for our buck when it comes to fly buys points, shop here and you will be throwing your own summer shindig with the help of your Fly Buys rewards in no time!
